Now that we’re in the middle of our hurricane season, it’s a
good time to consider generator safety. There’s a few things you should consider when you set up and run your
generator:
1. Many people make the mistake of either setting the generator up in a confined space or inside their garage…even with the garage door open, there is not enough ventilation to account for the increased levels of carbon monoxide generators produce. Keep it outside.
2. Install Carbon Monoxide alarms in your home. This will alert you in the event of an increased presence of carbon monoxide in your home.
3.If you need to refuel your generator, be sure to turn it off and let it cool down.If you spill any gasoline on your generator, it could create a hazardous condition with the potential to ignite.
4. Keep the generator on a flat, clean, dry surface.
5.When using your generator, turn it on first, then plug appliances/components into it one at a time, to avoid overloading the generator.
There are quite a few other tips you should be following,
but starting with these will make sure you’re staying safe during an otherwise
stressful situation.
