Windermere Florida is truly one of Central Florida’s great
towns. What many people don’t
know, however, is that its history reaches centuries back, and even spreads
across the Atlantic.
The Lake Butler/Windermere area was originally settled by
the Timacuan Indian Tribe for thousands of years, prior to being settled by the
Spanish in the mid 1500’s. Interestingly
enough, the town began to take shape in the mid 1880’s, about 40 years after
Florida became a state.
Back then, Joseph Hill Scott, an Englishman, bought a large
plot of land for his two sons, who ended up naming the land Windermere, after
Lake Windermere, in England.
Lake Butler is the largest lake in the Windermere area,
located among the Chain of Lakes.
This has become one of the most exclusive areas in all of Florida. Notable present and past residents
include:
Shaquille Oneal
Tiger Woods
Ken Griffey Jr
Wesley Snipes
Mark O Meara
Grant Hill
Johnny Damon
Bubba Watson
