Winter Park, Florida, has a worldwide reputation for being one of the premier neighborhoods in all of Florida. Originally inhabited by the Seminole Indians, once the Muscogee and Choctaw Indians intermingled, it was not inhabited by Europeans until the late 1850's when David Mizell purchased a plot of land, and developed it into a small settlement, named Osceola. It wasn't, however, until the 1880's, that Winter Park started to bloom.
The area became what it is when Loring Chase, who moved down from Chicago, to recover from a lung disease, enlisted Oliver E Chapman, a well connected, wealthy New Englander, to market the town to northerners. The area was renamed Winter Park to sound attractive to the high class in the northeast, and, in fact, the town was actually modeled to look like a New England town.
The neighborhood is home to several colleges, the main one being Rollins College, known for being Florida's first state funded university. The main road, Park Avenue, rivals any other Avenue in America, with stunning high end shops, five star restaurants, entertainment, and a central park, home to many year round festivities.
The Winter Park Art Festival is one of America's oldest and finest art festivals. It is always ranked in the top 5 art festivals around the world, and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors at a time. There is also an award winning boat tour, cruising the Winter Park Chain of Lakes, where you can see much of Florida's natural habitat and wildlife, while still having a look at the million dollar homes lining the shoreline.
